Making an Informed Decision About Vaccination – What You Need to Know

A Vaccinated Industry is a Safe, Sustainable and Successful Industry

This week we continue our exploration of the covid vaccination programme in South Africa as more and more businesses in South Africa look at making vaccination mandatory for employees and consumers. It’s becoming so important to help make an informed decision for ourselves, for the sake of our families, our friends, and for vulnerable people in our society.

According to the recent News24 Special Projects publication below, the number of people being vaccinated against Covid-19 in South Africa is on the rise and vaccine acceptance in South Africa is now comparable to high-income countries such as Australia and Germany. But nearly one in four participants were still hesitant about getting vaccinated. About one in 15 were strongly opposed to vaccinations.

Much of this seems to be because of underlying uncertainty and distrust. With all the misinformation that’s been making the rounds for months, we need a source that will help you be informed and reassured!

Here's what you need to know about Covid-19 vaccines – and what you can ignore – to make an informed decision.

One of the more reassuring statistics that is now being seen as vaccination progresses is that getting vaccinated protects you from being hospitalised or dying of Covid-19. This was shown in last week’s social media share by the UCT Faculty of Health Sciences of what doctors are seeing at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town on Sept 6 2021. Of the total number of 254 patients hospitalised at that point with Covid-19, only 3 had been vaccinated, and these patients only needed regular hospitalisation. Of the 66 in High Care/ICU and the 32 on ventilators, none had been previously vaccinated. This shows that getting vaccinated works to protect you!

One of the most concerning questions is how vaccines actually work.

In this video, Cheleka Mpande, a researcher at Eh!woza and Ph.D student in Immunology at the University of Cape Town, explains how vaccines work to train your body’s immune system to recognise intruders.

We’ve asked some of our top professionals in the industry to share their thoughts with us and each week we’ll be sharing their stories for you to enjoy. If you have a positive experience you’d like to share with us on the vaccine and the differences it’s made in your personal life or your salon and with your clients’ appreciation of their salon experiences, please send to Beth at beth@hairnews.co.za , with a photo you’d like us to use!
