Below are answers to some of the questions you may have about what a cruise ship contract involves. To read part 1 of this series click HERE.
Q. HOW MUCH MONEY CAN I MAKE?
A. The sky is the limit as far as your earnings go, and you will learn the confidence, philosophy and skills that will superpower your career in the future. Wage commissions have a minimum monthly guarantee. This is your chance to see the world while earning tax-free dollars. As your accommodation and meals are all provided on board, it is very easy to save significant amounts of money.
Q. HOW DO I GET PAID?
A. Each staff member receives a Visa debit card by Brightwell where you can access money via ATMs and transfer funds online. Salaries are automatically credited to accounts. The debit card can be used to withdraw money from an ATM machine or pay at any venue that accepts credit or debit cards. Pay cycles vary from cruise line to cruise line, but typically occur bi-weekly or monthly. Another benefit of the Brightwell savings account is that money can be wired into a savings account.
Q. WHAT ONBOARD EXPENSES WILL I INCUR?
A. Your accommodation and meals are provided for free, and your work uniforms are usually laundered free of charge. Personal clothes are washed by the ship’s laundry for a small fee. If you prefer washing and ironing your own clothing, there is often a crew self-service laundry area available. If you want to make phone calls, use wi-fi at sea, make gift shop purchases, buy drinks from the bar, and do personal laundry then you will pay for these extras.
Q: WHERE WILL I SLEEP ON BOARD THE SHIP?
A: . You will be allocated a small cabin which you will share with a team member. It is equipped with a bunk bed, telephone, small wardrobe closet, dresser, private shower and bathroom facilities. Cabins can be personalised by hanging up pictures of loved ones and what inspires you. The space can be made your very own.
Q: WHAT IS THE FOOD LIKE?
A: Cruise ships offer a wide variety of mouthwatering food and beverage options. The crew dining room is open at all times for staff and all food here is free. If the ship has specialty restaurants, crew are allowed to book in for a paid meal for celebrations, special occasions, or to treat yourself.
Q: WHAT ABOUT CALLING HOME AND WI-FI?
A: Calling family and friends has become easier over time, and on many ships, you can call home from the comfort of your cabin. Costs are very reasonable. E-mail and messages can be accessed at sea if you subscribe to the onboard wireless plan (a nominal charge). You can use your phone whilst in port, and many ports also offer complimentary WiFi.
