Empowering Students: Nativechild Believes They Must be More than Just a Haircare Brand

Nativechild is a natural, plant based hair and bodycare brand which caters for the needs of people of color and makes products specialises in textured hair. Sonto Pooe created these products after living abroad and seeing so many options instore and realising that there was a gap in the market back in SA for products that combine the love of one’s natural hair and using carefully selected biodegradable ingredients . Nativechild understands both sides of the coin being an end use and a formulator. Their core focus is in providing their customers with effective natural based skin and hair care products that that do not contribute toxicity on the body.

Our Mission: Empowering Students to Dream Big

Nativechild CEO Sonto Pooe believes that dreaming big, working hard, and never letting go of your dreams is an imperative message to spread to the youth. Nativechild has visited six schools in the last few weeks and challenged the students to partake in a TikTok competition.

In the next few weeks, Nativechild will be launching their No One Left Behind campaign to provide essentials goods to less fortunate children.

As year-end exams roll around, Nativechild has embarked on a mission to empower high school students to dream big and to teach them that they are the masters of their own destinies through its school tour initiative. Sonto Pooe, CEO of Nativechild, has chosen six marginalised schools in Gauteng where she and her team have visited to give inspiring talks and teach the learners that no goal is too big and that if they work hard enough, they can be anything they want to be.

“As someone who grew up in an environment where I had to work hard for what I have achieved, I thought it necessary to spread the message to our future youth about dreaming big, working hard and never letting go of your dreams. Though timing was tight, with exams coming up, I grabbed the opportunity to spread my message, hoping to push them to give their absolute best to their studying.”

– Sonto Pooe, CEO of Nativechild

In the last few weeks, the team at Nativechild have visited six schools in total, including Cosmo Secondary School in Cosmo, Eqinisweni Secondary School in Thembisa, Lukhanyo High School in Randfontein, Jabulani Technical School in Soweto, and Illinge High School in Vosloorus.

Popular TikTok the Competition Medium for Students’ Expression of Hope

At these visits, our TikTok competition was launched where students from the schools need to post a TikTok video using a Nativechild product and tell the company what their future goals and dreams are.

Prizes up for grabs include five tablets, the opportunity for 20 students to be part of a Nativechild exclusive photoshoot, and the opportunity for 30 students to be part of the Nativechild Tiktok campaign.

Pooe says,

“Initially we wanted to give away five bursaries, but as the learners aren’t required to pay for their school fees, we thought access to a tablet would benefit them more. We had the best time meeting and interacting with the students from these schools.

And once there, we realized what we can do as a community to support our pupils. On the 3rd of December we will be kickstarting our No One Left Behind campaign where we will be collecting school supplies, sanitary towels, plus funding to buy uniforms and shoes as we encountered kids with very little. We welcome all to hold hands with us as we make a difference and help pupils focus on school. If you need more info on this initiative, please email info@nativechild.co.”

Wishing all the best to all the students who entered!

Competition closes on 30 January 2023.

Winners will be announced shortly.
