Stephen Delport here from the Bargaining Council

I would like to address all our ethnic salon owners and employees.

The last video was an overall view of the benefits of registering with the Council.

Today I would like to deal specifically with the Sick Pay Fund.

The Sick Pay Fund is a compulsory fund whereby the employer contributes half a percent of the basic salary, and deducts a half percent from the employee. This gets paid on a monthly basis.

This means the employer never has to pay sick pay to an employee. The employee can claim it from the Bargaining Council.

How does it work and what are the benefits?

It works over a 3 year cycle which commences the day the employee joins and becomes a member of the Sick Pay Fund.

As a member of the Sick Pay Fund you have a total of 66 paid days which may be taken off sick, over each three year period.

They are divided into two groups of 33 days each.

The first group is when the employee is off sick for 1 to 6 days at a time

The second group is when the employee is off sick for 7 days or more at a time.

After employees have belonged to the fund and contributed for one year, they are entitled to a maternity benefit where the Council will pay 30 % of the prescribed basic salary for the 4 months that the employee is on maternity leave.

There is a specific process where you must apply to claim from the sick pay fund, and this is done through the Johannesburg office.

Additional information on the Bargaining Council Agreement: We have realised that there is a big need for information on what is contained in the Bargaining Council Agreement. As a result the Council has decided to provide training sessions in the future, where people working in the ethnic hair and beauty industry will be trained on the Agreement, what it contains, and what it means, so that both employees and employers are empowered.

Thank you – more information to follow in our next video!
